It’s Mary Chapin Carpenter… for years one of my favorite songwriters/singers. I feel fortunate to have seen her live during her 1994 acoustic tour and have heard an incredible version of “Quittin’ Time”. But this is what I’ve been listening to lately – a song called “Late For Your Life”
“No one knows where they belong, the search just goes on and on and on,
For every choice that that ends up wrong, another one’s right…
A change of scene would sure be great, the thought is nice to contemplate,
But the question begs “why would you wait,
And be late for your life?”
OK, it's from her album titled "Time, Sex, Love". Realistically, things we all have to deal with in our lives eventually.
Musically, this one just tugs at me. Absolutely beautiful guitar work, from acoustic to distorted electric and it all works together. Mary Chapin sings in her soft voice, where you need to listen hard to every syllable to get every nuance.
Lyrically? Well it poses quite the question. I find it the equivalent of “well, you’re here, you have choices, you can make a difference… what choices are you going to make? What difference are you going to make?”
I guess every day we are making those choices. And at the end of the day, maybe we should all be asking ourselves “why did I wait?”
I, for one, sometimes wonder.
